Sparks flew at the United Nations Monday: After Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vehemently denied building a nuclear weapon, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton accused Iran of trying “to divert attention and confuse the issue” by attending the conference. “[Tehran] will do whatever it can to… attempt to evade accountability,” she said, accusing it of “flouting the rules.” Clinton also pointed out that Iran was the only country at the talks not in compliance with the U.N.’s nuclear safeguards obligations, placing “the future of the nonproliferation regime in jeopardy.” While Ahmadinejad criticized America for its weapons arsenal, Clinton announced a new era of transparency: For the first time, the Pentagon disclosed just how many nuclear weapons it has, coming out to 5,113 nuclear warheads and several thousand awaiting dismantling. The move came as part of President Obama’s mission for a nuclear-free world.
