A Hong Kong woman accused of beating her Indonesian maids and threatening to kill their families was sentenced Friday to six years in prison. Law Wan-tung, a 44-year-old mother of two, was found guilty of 18 to 20 abuse charges against Erwiana Sulistyaningsih and another Indonesian maid. The former beautician pleaded not guilty to all but one charge of not purchasing insurance to cover her maid. The high-profile case sparked international attention, highlighting Hong Kong’s need to review policies on migrant workers. There are about 330,000 foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong, many of whom earn less than half of minimum wage and are often forced to endure physical and emotional abuse, human-rights groups say.
