French President François Hollande on Friday denounced the violent protests that swept Paris over ride-sharing service Uber, adding that the service should be declared illegal. Protests by taxi drivers broke out on Thursday, blocking access to the the Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports, where celebrities Kanye West and Courtney Love appeared to be caught in the violence. Hollande called the riots “unacceptable violence in a democracy, in a country like France,” but added “UberPOP should be dissolved and declared illegal.” Known as UberPOP in France, the service was declared illegal in France in January but drivers continue to operate. Police arrested 10, seven officers were injured, and 70 vehicles were damaged in the riots.
