The House Judiciary Committee announced Thursday it will begin introducing a series of bills designed to overhaul the nation’s immigration system this week. Rep. Robert W. Goodlatte (R-VA) said the first of the proposals would create a temporary guest-worker program for agriculture, and require employers to use electronic verification to check employees’ immigration status. The proposals are designed to jump-start the immigration debate in the House, according to Goodlatte. The House announcement comes after the Senate wrapped up the last of three hearings on new immigration legislation offering an eventual path to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants already in the country.
