The House of Representatives voted Thursday to censure Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), after they found him guilty last month of ethics violations. The House voted 333-79 for censure, the harshest punishment offered aside from expulsion. Rangel was found guilty of failing to report or pay taxes on rental income from a Dominican villa, improperly soliciting donations for a personal charity and running a campaign office out of a residential, rent-controlled apartment. Rangel, a 21-term congressman who once sat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, gave a short statement afterward, apologizing for the “awkward” position his colleagues were in and saying “I know in my heart that I’m not going to be judged by this Congress ... I’ll be judged by my life in its entirety.”
