After months of waiting, the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics will kick off with the Opening Ceremony on Friday night at 7:00pm EST.
Historically, the Opening Ceremony have been used by host countries to set the tone of the entire Games.
For the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, China showcased its ambitions for world dominance and its strong nationalism; in 2012, the London Olympic Committee decided to show off national treasures, like Paul McCartney, James Bond, Posh Spice, and the Queen herself. And for the 2014 Winter Olympics, Russia put on a creepy, disorganized, over-the-top ceremony in Sochi.
Will the 2016 Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony continue the theme of apocalyptic, Zika-infested mayhem? Will it be a tropical pageant full of samba music and carnivalesque joie de vivre? Will it feature Brazil’s most famous exports, former Victoria’s Secret Angels Gisele Bündchen, Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio?
Watch to find out.
