Better late than never: Hungary is trying Sandor Kepiro, a 97-year-old man who was listed by the Simon Wiesenthal Center as the world’s most wanted Nazi war crimes suspect. Kepiro is accused of orchestrating the slaughter of 1,200 Jewish, Serbian, and Roma citizens in the city of Nova Sad in January 1942. Kepiro was convicted of the killings in 1944, but the Hungarian government quashed it; he then fled to Argentina, before returning to Hungary in 1996. He says he is “completely innocent” and held a paper during his trial reading, "Murderers of a 97-year-old man!"
