Rain and winds from Hurricane Earl, now a Category 2 storm, hit North Carolina's Outer Banks Thursday night. Hurricane conditions are expected to persist through Friday for North Carolina's coast. According to the National Hurricane Center, which issued an advisory at 2 a.m. Eastern time on Friday: "On the forecast track... the center of Earl will pass near the North Carolina Outer Banks tonight… and will approach southeastern New England on Friday night." Mandatory evacuations were issued for parts of North Carolina. Earl is expected to pass New Jersey on Friday and reach Nantucket and the Massachusetts coast as a Category 1 storm.
