Hurricane Irene continued its slow snarl up the East Coast Saturday night, as it battered Virginia—leaving at least eight people dead and stranding two million without power. Three people, including an 11-year-old boy crushed to death when a tree fell on his apartment complex—were killed in Virginia, while huge waves killed a surfer in Florida and North Carolina said four people were confirmed dead and another one missing. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said that two million people had lost power Saturday night and the storm surge could exceed eight feet in some areas—which could cause serious flooding. The storm spawned tornados in New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware as FEMA said tornados are not normally associated with this level of storm. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland was closed Saturday night due to high winds and unsafe driving conditions.
