At 6:26 CT, Texas executed 59-year-old Suzanna Basso, who was convicted of torturing and killing a mentally impaired man that she enticed with the prospect of marriage in order to collect insurance and Social Security benefits. Since capital punishment was allowed to resume in 1976, 14 women have been executed, while nearly 1,400 men have been put to death over the same period. Texas, which has the most death penalty sentences, has executed 505 men and 4 women.
