The Obama administration is taking a stand in a major front in the recent culture war, rejecting Indiana’s attempt to defund Planned Parenthood. The Hoosier State followed national Republicans in working to defund the family-planning group, which also offers abortions. The federal government provides money for planning but forbids groups from using it to pay for abortions, save in cases of rape and incest. Indiana’s controversial bill would have banned that money from going to Planned Parenthood for any reason, but Donald Berwick, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, ruled the move was illegal.
