According to some conservative members of the Iowa House of Representatives, the four Iowa Supreme Court justices who voted in 2009 to kill a ban on same-sex marriage deserve to have their salaries decreased. It’s the only suitable way to “maintain the balance of power” between the three branches of government after those justices so disgracefully “trashed” it, they argue. Paying those four justices less than the rest isn’t a punishment, insists Republican Rep. Dwayne Alons, a proponent of the amendment, which says that the specified pay cut would go into effect when Iowans pass a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. “We’re just holding them responsible for their decision, for going beyond their bounds,” Alons said.
