Nouri al-Maliki may just have seen his last hope go up in smoke, as Iran on Tuesday endorsed Iraq’s prime minister designate, Haider al-Abadi. Maliki, who has been in power for eight years, claims he should remain prime minister because his party won the most seats. Iran joins President Barack Obama and the UN in welcoming the nomination of Abadi, a Shiite. His nomination has also garnered the support of the Kurds, Sunnis, and many Shiites.
