Iran reportedly sent rockets and missiles to Iraqi forces to help fight the self-proclaimed Islamic State in retaking Tikrit, The New York Times reported Monday, citing U.S. intelligence officials. About two-thirds of the 30,000 troops in the Tikrit offensive are Iranian-backed Shiite militias, according to three American officials. Though Iran has not launched any of the weapons, some U.S. officials are concerned that the use of non-precise rockets and missiles could intensify sectarian tensions and cause more civilian casualties. It’s unclear how many weapons the Iranians brought with launchers or how they would plan to resupply their stockpile, an official said.
