Ireland accidentally legalized a coterie of drugs for 24 hours, including ecstasy, magic mushrooms, and Valium. On Tuesday morning, the Irish Court of Appeals found the 1977 Misuse of Drugs Act was unconstitutional. In response to the ruling, Ireland’s Department of Health issued a statement: “All substances controlled by means of Government Orders made under section 2(2) cease to be controlled with immediate effect, and their possession ceases to be an offense. These include ecstasy, benzodiazepines and new psychoactive substances, so-called ‘headshop drugs.’” While the legislature will rush through an emergency measure to close the loophole, these drugs appear to not technically be illegal for the next 24 hours. Also on Tuesday, the government came close to submitting a same-sex marriage referendum that would have potentially led to banning heterosexual marriage. There were complications with the translation to the Irish-language version in which the wording could have led opposite marriage to be deemend unconsitutional.
