Homer Simpson is Catholic, declares the official Vatican newspaper in an article endorsing the not-so-holy-rolling Simpsons. "Few people know it, and he does everything to hide it. But it's true: Homer J. Simpson is Catholic," the Osservatore Romano newspaper said. The theory is based on a study written by a Jesuit priest in 2005 that observed that the cartoon was one of the few shows in which “Christian faith, religion and questions about God are recurrent themes." The yellow family even prays before meals. Executive producer Al Jean was surprised with the declaration, however, noting that the Simpsons attend a “Presbylutheran” church. Besides, Jean said, "I really don't think [Homer] could go without eating meat on Fridays—for even an hour."
