Following the deadly confrontation between the Israeli navy and a Turkish ship carrying aid to Gaza this week, Israel’s government is standing its ground. With another aid ship, the MV Rachel Corrie, fast-approaching, the Middle Eastern country is vowing to block the vessel from breaching its blockade of the Gaza Strip as well. The Irish vessel, named after an activist run over by a bulldozer in 2003 while protesting in Israel, is carrying just 11 passengers, including a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Mairead Maguire, and a former U.N. deputy secretary-general, Denis Halliday. By comparison, the Turkish ship had almost 700 people on board. The Rachel Corrie is expected to reach Gaza by late Saturday morning. Those on board have said that they will not resist if Israeli forces take over the ship.
