While presenting his new credentials at the United Nations office in New York, Youssoufou Bamba, the new U.N. ambassador for the Ivory Coast, begged Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to address the "massive violations of human rights" which have already killed 172 people in the country. Bamba said that supporters of President-elect Alassane Ouattara are being targeted and their houses are being marked to show which tribe they belong to. "What will be next?" he asked reporters on Wednesday, calling the nation “on the brink of genocide.” The U.N., U.S., and the African Union all declared Ouattara the winner of the Ivory Coast's recent election, but incumbent Laurent Gbagbo refuses to vacate and has been accused of torturing and killing dissidents.
