The radiation leak at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was worse than we thought: Japan has doubled its estimate of radiation leaked in the week after the March 11 tsunami to more than 770,000 terabecquerels. It insists, however, that most of that radiation blew out to sea rather than into nearby populated areas. The plant’s operator still plans to shut down the facility by January; some 100,000 tons of radioactive water have accumulated in buildings, basements, and tunnels.
