An unapproved drug to help treat Ebola has been offered up by Japan in an attempt to halt the deadly spread of the virus in western Africa. The medication is called Fabipiravir and was approved for experimental use in Japan in March, though it is waiting approval for testing with the American FDA. “Our country is prepared to provide the yet-to-be approved drug in cooperation with the manufacturer if the WHO requests,” the Japanese government announced, saying it has enough for more than 20,000 people. “Even before the WHO reaches a conclusion, we are ready to respond to individual requests [from medical workers] under certain conditions if it is an urgent case.”
