Increased tensions between the two powers caused Japan to call back its ambassador to China on Sunday. The temporary action came about as Japan deals with numerous tensions from abroad, including a territorial dispute with China and Taiwan and reports that the United States had condemned the country’s practice of forcing women into brothels during World War II. Officials in Japan said that the ambassador was withdrawn so he could speak with the government about how to best resolve the dispute over the unoccupied islands near Okinawa and that he would be sent back to China soon.
