As danger at nuclear power plants continues to unfold, a massive search and rescue operation is under way in Japan to find survivors of the earthquake and tsunami. Japanese media estimate the current death toll to be as high as 1,700, but much higher figures are feared: One coastal town is missing 10,000 of its residents, and some of the hardest-hit areas have still not been reached by rescue crews. The U.S. is sending helicopters as well as an aircraft carrier equipped to serve as a hospital.
