Fallout from the March 11 earthquake and subsequent tsunami off the coast of eastern Japan was even more far-reaching than was thought. Scientists have discovered that waves from the tsunami cracked parts of an Antarctic ice shelf that hadn’t moved in 46 years. Though the waves were minuscule (one foot high) when they reached Antarctica, they were consistent enough to crack icebergs that were 260 feet thick and more than twice the size of Manhattan in combined surface area. It took the waves 18 hours to travel 8,000 miles, scientists said in a NASA statement.
