The Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force issued an apology Sunday for mistakenly reporting that Jericho the lion, Cecil’s “brother,” was dead. It turns out the lion “is in fact alive and well and has adopted Cecil’s cubs,” according to a post on the group’s Facebook page. Another lion (which was mistaken for Jericho), however, was hunted and killed. It also turns out that Jericho and Cecil are not actual blood brothers. “They were not related though their bond was one close to brotherhood. Male lions often form what are termed co-operative ‘coalitions’ with unrelated males in order to better compete with other males for territories and prides,” the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit said in a statement.
