A man who organized a plot to blow up New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport will spend the rest of his life in federal prison. Russell Defreitas, a native of Guyana who is a U.S. citizen, was arrested in 2007 when police discovered the bomb plot. He was the leader of a four-man cell that had made videos of the airport and sought both explosives and expertise. Defreitas’ lawyer had called for clemency, saying the cell was all talk and no execution. He is the third member of the team to be sentenced; co-conspirators received life and 15 years, while the fourth will be tried later in the spring.
