The New York Times’ Jill Abramson will have the pleasure of editing her old boss, Bill Keller, who is stepping down to become a full-time writer for the paper. Effective Sept. 6, she will be the first woman executive editor in the Times' 160-year history. Abramson has been managing editor of the Times since 2003 and is a former investigative reporter and Washington bureau chief for the paper. As managing editor, she was one of Keller's two top deputies overseeing the entire newsroom. She said that as a native New Yorker, she feels the new post is like “ascending to Valhalla.” "In my house growing up, the Times substituted for religion,” she said. “If the Times said it, it was the absolute truth." Another big change was announced as well: Dean Baquet, the Washington bureau chief, will take Abramson's old job as managing editor.
