Amid the ads for Bud Light, Go Daddy, and Doritos during Sunday night's Super Bowl, one commercial stood out as strikingly political. Against a moving backdrop of American cities and citizens, the unmistakable, raspy voice of Clint Eastwood told viewers that "this country can't be knocked out with one punch. We get right back up again, and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines." Though it was made clear at the end of the spot that the ad was for Chrysler, many have suggested that Eastwood was effectively promoting the Obama administration and, more specifically, the auto bailout. Never mind the fact that Eastwood was once the Republican mayor of a California city and vocally opposed bailing out banks and car companies, Karl Rove, among others, is offended. “I’m a huge fan of Clint Eastwood, I thought it was an extremely well-done ad, but it is a sign of what happens when you have Chicago-style politics, and the President of the United States and his political minions are, in essence, using our tax dollars to buy corporate advertising and the best-wishes of the management which is benefited by getting a bunch of our money that they'll never pay back.” Meanwhile, Chrysler’s CEO insists the ad was in no way intended to be political.
