Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the jailed Russian oil tycoon who was once that country’s richest man, won’t be free until 2017. Khodorkovsky, whose current jail sentence was to end next year, was given another six years of imprisonment on Thursday for charges of fraud—taking billions of dollars of his company, Yukos. Found guilty on Monday, the judge decided he could “only be reformed by being isolated from society.” Khodorkovsky was also a main threat to former Russian President Vladimir Putin. His extended jail term keeps him out of the limelight until after the next presidential election, when he may have rallied the opposition.
