This would have been one to watch: a high-profile film version of King Lear has been scrapped, reports The Telegraph, despite an A-list cast including Keira Knightley, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Sir Anthony Hopkins, who would have played the titular role. Knightley was attached as Cordelia, Paltrow was due to play Regan, and Naomi Watts would have rounded out the cast as the third daughter Goneril. The film was announced with much fanfare at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and independent studio Ruby Films was set to produce, even though Al Pacino is attached to a similar adaptation. King Lear is yet another big budget project that has been waylaid by studios’ dwindling cash during the economic crisis.
