As Tuesday's fractious Senate vote on "don't ask, don't tell," looms, even pop stars are getting in on the debate. Music heavyweight Lady Gaga spoke at a rally in Maine on Monday in an effort to pressure the state’s two Republican senators to go against their party and vote for a repeal of the controversial policy, which bars gays from openly serving. Despite the enthusiasm from the crowd during Gaga’s speech, both Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins’ votes are unclear. While they both oppose the policy, which will be up for a vote in the Senate as part of a larger defense spending autohorization bill, they have not said whether they are willing to break with the GOP—still standing strong in opposition. Without their support, it is unlikely Democrats will be able to get 60 votes to keep the debate alive.
