The penultimate weekend of summer-movie season belonged to The Last Exorcism, directed by Daniel Stamm, as it raked in $9.4 million on Friday alone. Not far behind it, with $7.5 million at the Friday box office, came the heist film Takers, leaving The Expendables in third place for its third weekend in theaters. But perhaps the most closely watched new release Friday was James Cameron’s updated version of Avatar, which only barely earns the title “new release” because of nine minutes of extra footage that did not appear in theaters last winter. But the highest-grossing film of all time only added $1.2 million to its astronomical tally—just under $3 billion —on Friday.
