Less than half of 1 percent of people arrested in Chicago in the past three years saw an attorney while in police custody, CNN reported Wednesday. The statistics were issued to the site by the city’s police department and may indicate an infringement of citizens’ legal rights. The news comes in the wake of a report issued last month that found “CPD generally provides phone access [to arrestees] only at the end of processing, after interrogation and charging” and “when individuals in custody attempt to invoke their legal rights to counsel, they report facing hostility from police.”
