The U.S. and Libyan governments had face-to-face talks in Tunisia on Saturday, officials from both countries confirmed Monday, but the two sides disagreed on what was discussed. A U.S. State Department official said Washington agreed to the meeting only so it could deliver the message that embattled Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi had to step down, and said no further talks are planned; a Libyan official described the meeting as a first step and said Tripoli was not considering Gaddafi’s resignation. Last week the French foreign minister said he had been talking with Libyan officials as well.
