Malaysia detained 17 people suspected militants over an alleged terrorist plot in Kuala Lumpur, authorities said Monday. Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said the 17 suspects were detained on Sunday and two of them had just returned from Syria. The news follows the announcement of two new anti-terror laws proposed by the Home Ministry that would allow indefinite detention without trial and the seizure of passports for anyone suspected of supporting terror acts. Critics warn the proposed measures are reminiscent of a security law that was repealed in 2012. The bills are slated for debate in parliament this week.
