Tashfeen Malik, one of the two San Bernardino shooters, studied at a religious institute that teaches a fundamentalist strain of Islam while she was a student in Pakistan, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. Malik was enrolled in Bahauddin Zakariya University in Pakistan’s Punjab region several years ago, but two classmates said she was also regularly attending classes at Al Huda, a chain of religious institutes with the objective of bringing women “back to their religious roots.” One of the two classmates, who asked not to be identified, said Malik attended Al Huda sessions “almost every day.” Pakistan security analyst Ayesha Siddiqa told the Times Al Huda teaches fundamentalism, but does not necessarily promote jihadi ideas.
