Last month a man set himself on fire in China’s Tiananmen Square—the first self-immolation at the famous site of the 1989 pro-democracy protests in more than a decade. State media never reported the incident, but Britain's Daily Telegraph has obtained a photo of the incident, showing the man shortly after police officers doused him with fire extinguishers. When contacted, China confirmed the self-immolation, saying the man was unhappy with the outcome of civil litigation in court. The last people to self-immolate in Tiananmen Square were a group of five Falun Gong protesters, including a 12-year-old girl, in 2001.
