Bill Badger, who intervened when a shooter opened fire on a supermarket event for former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, died Wednesday of pneumonia in Arizona. He was 78. The retired Army colonel was praised for tackling gunman Jared Loughner after he fatally shot six people and wounded 13, including Giffords, at a Tuscon grocery store in 2011. Badger was also shot in the head. “Bill was not only a great man and a proud Army veteran, he was a hero,” Giffords said in a statement.
