Marine Corps veteran William Kyle Carpenter is reported to be the next service member to receive the Medal of Honor. Carpenter, a 24-year-old retired corporal, will be the third recipient from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Carpenter’s heroics came as a 21-year-old lance corporal, when he covered a grenade to save a friend’s life in 2010 while standing guard on a rooftop in Afghanistan’s Helmand province. He lost his right eye, most of his teeth, and was left with a shattered jaw and an arm broken in multiple places. His friend, Lance Cpl. Nicholas Eufrazio, suffered brain damage from shrapnel and was unable to speak until 2012.
