It’s judgment day for General Stanley McChrystal: The commander in Afghanistan is set to meet with President Obama on Wednesday to learn his fate after his disastrous decision to grant Rolling Stone a candid interview. Time magazine’s Joe Klein and CBS News both say McChrystal has already offered his resignation, but Obama is keeping his cards close, saying on Tuesday night that, while McChrystal “showed poor judgment,” he wants “to talk to him directly before I make any final decisions." Politico observes that, even if McChrystal goes, his strategy in Afghanistan is likely to remain. Looking forward, Thomas Ricks at Foreign Policy hopes that General David Petraeus steps down a post to take over McChrystal’s position, though he says that it’s more likely that Marine General James Mattis, a man in Petraeus’s mold, will take over.
