Gen. Stanley McChrystal appears to have made good on his promise to make a "quantum shift" on the Afghanistan battlefield. During an interview with Diane Sawyer, McChrystal said that he thinks "the tide is turning" in Afghanistan and that "we are on the way to convincing the Afghan people that we are here to protect them." And while McChrystal acknowledges that the mission in Afghanistan is not yet complete, he's optimistic, as the 30,000-strong troop surge has only recently gotten underway. The Afghans are optimistic, too. According to a survey by ABC News, the BBC, and ARD German TV, 70 percent of Afghans believe that their country is headed in the right direction, the highest level since 2005, while a new high of 71 percent believe that their lives will be better a year from now.
