Residents of central and southern California have been getting a show the past several days as meteors in the South Taurids stream flash across the sky. Californians on Twitter described the sightings as “flareups” or “fireballs” appearing as if something had entered the atmosphere. Some drivers slammed on their brakes in alarm, and then pulled over to watch. The National Weather Service said the Taurids are known for having unusually bright meteors, and appear annually around the end of October, earning them the nickname the “Halloween fireballs.”
