There's one less voice in Mexico fighting back against the drug cartel plague. A mayor from the Mexican state of Michoacan, Ygnacio Lopez Mendoza, was found dead on Thursday in his truck in neighboring state Guanajuato. On Friday, authorities said that Lopez had been abducted, tortured and killed. State prosecutors said he died of "asphyxia secondary to neck trauma." Lopez had been outspoken about the extortion demands from cartels that targeted small local governments like his. Drug-war violence has claimed the lives of 47 mayors in the last eight years, according to the Association of Local Authorities of Mexico.
