Minneapolis police chief Janee Harteau has stepped down at the request of the city’s mayor after an officer fatally shot an unarmed Australian woman last week. The death of 40-year-old Justine Damond, who was shot after phoning 911 to report an assault near her home, has triggered international outrage, with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull among those to condemn the incident. Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges issued a statement on Friday saying she’d “lost confidence in the Chief's ability to lead us further—and from the many conversations I've had with people around our city, especially this week, it is clear that she has lost the confidence of the people of Minneapolis as well.” In announcing her resignation on Friday, Harteau said she would resign to “let a fresh set of leadership eyes see what more can be done” for the city’s police force.
