Mitt Romney’s new foreign policy spokesman has a jam packed resume complete with stints as George W. Bush’s UN communications director and as spokesman for several other major Republicans. But the part of Richard Grenell’s background that’s sparked the most discussion is the fact that he is gay. His sexual orientation was never noted in the media coverage of his appointment until an anti-gay radio host slammed Romney for the hire. This brought backlash from other gay Republicans, one of whom points out that, while Republicans have appointed gay officials for years, Romney having one on his staff probably won’t hurt his image with younger voters.
