According to a Major League Baseball investigation, last weekend's mishap involving the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus' performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" before a Padres game was simply the product of "human error." In a Thursday afternoon statement, the league noted that the choir has performed before at Petco Park without any issues; and that "the situation was exacerbated by the fact that the lead entertainment supervisor was involved in a car accident [the night before] and thus was unable to work... and handle his typical responsibilities." Therefore, the investigators concluded, the employees involved in playing a pre-recorded female voice while the choir was set to perform were "insufficiently familiar" with their roles, and "had no malicious intentions." The league also praised the Padres organization for its "contrition" and efforts to remedy the situation.
