America’s favorite pastime is back.
MLB’s Opening Day is Monday, April 3 and you won’t want to miss this. You might think to yourself, “I’m not going to watch opening day this year. Nothing exciting is happening.” But you’re wrong. While there are no breakout stars to keep an eye on and you won’t be able to watch President Trump attempt to pitch, some incredible moments have happened on Opening Days past.
On Opening Day 1940, 21-year-old Bob Feller pitched a 1-0 no-hitter against the White Sox marking the first of a soon to be career best of 27 wins. During the game, Feller walked five and struck out eight.
Jackie Robinson made his Major League debut on Opening Day in 1947. Crowds swarmed the game wearing “I’m for Jackie Robinson” buttons. In addition to being a huge day for civil rights, the Dodgers beat the Braves 5-3.
In 1974, during his second at-bat for the season, Hank Aaron hit the 714th home run of his career. This tied him with the Great Bambino’s record. Four days later he hit the record-setting home run.
