At least 10 deaths across the country are being blamed on Wednesday’s fierce winter storm that blanketed the Midwest with snow and coated the Northeast in ice. Chicago in particular was hard-hit, with five deaths being linked to the storm, 30,000 residents without power, and the Cook County Jail declaring its first state of emergency in 30 years. Meteorologists said this type of massive storm, although predicted, is rare and something that comes along “once every 50 years—maybe.” Although the storm is receding, Chicago should brace itself: With snowdrifts measuring as high as eight feet, the area is expected to be hit with the coldest temperatures in two years on Thursday. At least 5,300 flights were canceled on Wednesday.
