As Syria’s civil war spills into another year, more than 76,000 people have died in 2014, making it the deadliest year yet, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Thursday. The U.K.-based monitoring group said it recorded 17,790 civilian deaths, of which 3,501 were children. The conflict, which began in 2011 over anti-regime protests against Bashar al-Assad, has claimed more than 200,000 lives. The group also added that more than 15,000 rebel fighters were killed in Iraq this year, as well as 17,000 militants from groups such as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and the al-Nusra Front, which marks the biggest death toll nationwide since 2007.
