Adm. Mike Mullen, the nation's top military leader, said Friday the U.S. won't be sending troops to Yemen, and that the country has made it clear they don't want them either. Asked about the possibility in an address to hundreds of students at the Naval War College in Newport, Mullen said: "[W]e have no plans to do that, and we shouldn't forget this is a sovereign country." Later, he told reporters Yemen is an emerging safe-haven for al Qaeda. "Their foreign minister has been very clear, that they're not interested in forces on the ground," Mullen said. Attention has turned to the area after Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab allegedly told the FBI he trained with al Qaeda in Yemen before attempting to take down a Detroit-bound jetliner.
