We may be alone after all: NASA is distancing itself from a paper that claimed there were fossils of tiny bacteria in meteorites from outer space. But one hiccup: The author of the paper, Richard Hoover, is an engineer at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Hoover’s paper was published by the online Journal of Cosmology, which has been friendly to E.T. theories before, after it was rejected by the more respected Journal of Astrobiology. Since the paper now existed on the Internet, Fox News picked up the report and the ensuing press coverage prompted a chief scientist at NASA to condemn the study. Other scientists soon followed, with one blogger and biologist saying “I’m surprised anyone is granting it any credibility at all.” Hoover has not responded to requests for interviews.
